The Volvo 140 series was presented in 1966 as successor of the Volvo Amazon (120 series). With the introduction of the 140 series Volvo motor company gave their philosophy of reliability, functionality and safety a modern shape.
The Volvo 140 series came in three bodywork variant; a two door version (142), a four door version (144) and a "five door" station car, the 145. The boxy and modern functional design of the series made that the cars offered lots more interior space than it's predecessor.
Since the start of production the 140 series became available with two four cylinder engines of 1780 cc. and 1986 cc. The engines could be equipped with a single carburettor or two carburettors.  The latter models and the models for the US market were available with petrol injection. The engine capacities started with 75 bhp. for the 1780 single carburettor engine up to 124 bhp. for the 1986 cc. petrol injected engine.
In the year 1974 the 140 series was succeeded by
 the 240 series.
