The Alfa
Romeo Spider Veloce is the successor of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta/Giulia
Spider (1962-1965). This first Spider model based upon the new Giulia
was presented during the Genève motor show in the year 1966. The car
was introduced with a 1600 cc. engine and was named Alfa Romeo 1600
Spider.
Alfa Romeo decided to organise a contest in order to find a
beautiful new name for the car. The winning name was "Duetto".
The Alfa Romeo Spider "Duetto" was the last car design by the
famous designer Battista Pininfarina who retired after finishing this
beautiful car.
The Alfa Romeo Spider "Duetto" was available with three
cylinder capacities: 1300 cc. (Junior model), 1600 cc. and 1750 cc. the
Spider "Duetto" and all succeeding Giulia based Spider models
featured aluminium four cylinder engines with double overhead camshafts,
double twin choked carburettors (Weber or Dell'Orto), five speed gearbox
and disc brakes all round.
The advanced mechanics and the low weight of the car did much good for
the roadholding capabilities.
Compared with the British "roadsters" out of the 1960s and
1970s, the Spider Veloce is not a rugged sports car but more of a
competitive convertible touring car, or an open GT, if you like:
practical, spacious, easy to handle and very fast.
