Information

Swallow Coachbuilding Co, established by William Lyons and William Walmsley, built motorcycle side cars and bodywork for small cars in the 1920'ies. In the year 1931 the firm presented it's first car, the SS I. This car was largely based upon mechanicals and engine supplied by Standard Motor company. The SS I was a very good looking 'stretched' car with a long bonnet, close coupled coupe bodywork and a straight six engine. The car looked much more expensive than it actually was, just like the later Jaguar cars. The SS II was a more compact model presented in the year 1932. The SS II sported a Standard four cylinder engine. First the close coupled coupe was introduced, in 1934 a saloon and a 4-setaer tourer model followed. The close coupled saloon models of the SS I and SS II are rare. Of the SS 1 coupe 502 car were built, the SS II coupe 549 cars. Very rare is the SS 90 which was introduced in 1935. This stunning looking two-seater 'roadster' can only be described as near perfect in every aspect. In 1933 the Swallow firm was named SS after the cars. With the introduction of the SS 'Jaguar' 100 in 1936 the Jaguar name was heard for the first time. After world War 2, in 1945 the company was named Jaguar Cars. From the first SS models until the last Jaguar models built and designed under supervision of William Lyons one could clearly see his talents. William Lyons had the talent of creating and marketing stunning looking and well built motorcars at a much lower price than it's competitors.

Information

(Jaguar) Swallow SS II close coupled coupe, year 1932. Colour red/black with a black vinyl roof top and black enameled wire wheels. Chassis number: 133060. This absolutely stunning little SS II was built in April 1932. The car was sold new by Henlys Ltd. of London. The first owner being Mr. J. Barker from Chelsea. A little more history: in August 1965 the SS II was owned by Mrs. Joyce Clothier of Holsworthy Hamlest in Devonshire. In the year 1971 the car was purchased by the Dutchman Mr. Hans Compter who drove the SS II to the Netherlands. Mr. Compter moved to New Zealand in 1983 and he took the car with him. Another Dutchman, Mr. Geertman bought the car in 2002. The SS II was shipped to The Netherlands and a extensive restoration started. The automobile is in excellent++) near concours (show) condition. A Heritage certificate and a history file is present. The SS II is a very rare automobile and one of the very important predecessors of the Jaguar brand that emerged from SS in 1945. Only 549 of these cars were originally built and only few of these beauties survived. This is a great opportunity to buy one of the oldest existing SS II close coupled coupe’s in the world!
