Alvis 4.3 Litre Vanden Plas tourer special, 1937

Photo overview  -  Technical data  -  Information

Alvis was founded by Thomas George John and G.P. de Freville. The first cars built under the Alvis name were manufactured in 1920, and the last Alvis (sports) cars came out of the factory in Coventry 47 years later. The ending of the brand name Alvis was sealed when it was incorporated into the British Leyland concern, where it became part of Rover.

The Alvis cars were of great quality and workmanship and were very fast as well. As for their cars, many parts were designed and manufactured by Alvis’ own staff, and production was small-scaled and exclusive.

In the 1920s, Alvis was the first British car model to experiment with four-wheel drive. In fact, in 1925, they even manufactured sports and racing cars equipped with front-wheel drive, which had also been fitted with an overhead camshaft.

Information

Alvis 4.3 Litre Vanden Plas tourer special, year 1937. Colour light Aubergine metallic. Grey leather interior and grey carpet. Chassis number: 14315. This fabulous Alvis 4.3 Litre short chassis Vanden Plas Tourer model SA31/48 was new delivered in 1937 as Standard Saloon with UK registration ABT322. This unique automobile is in superb (excellent++) condition.
The history of the automobile is known and documented. First owner was Mr. Harold Hall Esq. of Walkington Hall, Walkington, near Beverley. Around the year 2000 'ABT322' needed total restoration, the then British owner had the automobile stripped back to the bare chassis. Mechanically everything was extensively overhauled. This included the fitting of a refurbished front axle, reconditioned gearbox, re-cored radiator, rejuvenated back axle, new clutch, new wiring loom etc. Using the crankcase from another 4.3 Litre engine (number 14206) as its basis, the replacement straight-six was treated to a new cylinder block, new cylinder head, new water pump, re-metalled bearings, new pistons and refurbished carburettors. As the project progressed the owner decided to have the car rebodied. Coachbuilders Wilkinson & Son of Derby were given the honour to rebody the car using a period Vanden Plas design.
Although far from universal the use of metallic paint was well established by the late 1930s. The Aubergine metallic combines beautifully with the perfect bright work and the machined dashboard. A few years ago the automobile was imported to the Netherlands. This Alvis 4.3 Litre Vanden Plas special tourer is a unique and very handsome automobile and a delightful driver!
