The Triumph Italia was a very handsome and exclusive coupe designed by the Italian Michelotti. Since the 1950'ies Michelotti was responsible for the design of all Triumph models up to the Stag. The Italia can be seen as a styling study for the later Triumph TR 4. The Italia coupe looked revolutionary modern and slick opposite the period Triumph TR 3. The coach built car was built on Triumph TR 3A and later TR 3B chassis by Vignale in Italy. The first prototype was shown in the year 1958 and the limited production started in 1959. Only about 329 of these exclusive Triumph cars were built until 1962. Most cars were left hand driven and most sold to the USA. Only about six cars were right hand driven cars for the British market. The limited production can be explained by the huge selling price which was about 40% higher as the TR 3 it was based on. Of course exclusivity has a price, body panels, bumpers, windows and the interior were all custom built for the Italia. All mechanics and the dashboard gauges were standard Triumph TR 3 items. Other interior and exterior details were derived from Italian suppliers like Carello. Nowadays these beautiful coupes are very much sought after. Four-cylinder
